Members of Parliament will soon have their performance formally assessed, with evaluation reports submitted directly to their political parties as part of new accountability measures announced by the Speaker of Parliament.
Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas told the House that the initiative is designed to measure MPs against clear standards and to improve the quality of legislative representation.
Under the proposed system, each lawmaker will be scored on attendance, punctuality, conduct, and overall contribution to parliamentary proceedings. The findings will be documented as official parliamentary records and made available to parties, the public, and other stakeholders upon request.
Speaker Thomas said the goal is to encourage greater commitment and professionalism in the House, while giving political parties credible information to guide future candidate selection and appointments to leadership roles.
High-performing MPs will also be considered for special recognition, including nomination to represent Sierra Leone at international parliamentary engagements.
The proposal received broad support from MPs. Leader of the Opposition Hon. Abdul Kargbo suggested parties appoint independent assessors to join the evaluation.
Speaker Thomas declined the proposal, stating he will personally oversee the process to ensure one consistent standard is applied to all 149 MPs, regardless of party.
The Speaker described the framework as part of ongoing efforts to promote transparency, efficiency, and public confidence in Parliament.
