FREETOWN — The National Revenue Authority has issued a tough warning to businesses and license holders with outstanding government obligations, saying defaulters face enforcement actions including business closures, account garnishment and travel restrictions.
In a public notice issued in Freetown on August 26, 2026, the NRA directed all entities with unpaid tax and non-tax revenue liabilities to settle their accounts immediately or face legal action.
The notice, released by the authority’s Public Affairs and Tax Education unit on behalf of the Commissioner General, listed categories of businesses that could be targeted. They include mining companies, Environmental Impact Assessment license holders, internet service providers, television and radio stations, state land leaseholders, factory operators, private security firms and liquor license holders.
According to the NRA, enforcement will be carried out under Section 12 of the Finance Act, 2019. The law empowers the authority to seal the premises of non-tax revenue debtors and to instruct third parties, including banks, to pay government debts directly from debtor accounts.
The authority said that failure to comply could result in the sealing of business premises, garnishment of business bank accounts, and restrictions on travel outside Sierra Leone where legally applicable.
The latest warning follows similar compliance notices issued by the NRA earlier in 2026, as part of an ongoing drive to recover outstanding government revenue.
The NRA urged all affected taxpayers and license holders to treat the directive as urgent and to regularise their payments without delay to avoid enforcement measures.
