Sierra Leone and China have jointly inaugurated a Nursing Training Hub at the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital as part of efforts to raise nursing standards and improve healthcare delivery across the country.
The facility was officially opened on July 3, 2026, under the leadership of the 27th Chinese Medical Team deployed to Sierra Leone. The hub is expected to serve as a national center for structured nursing education, skills upgrade, and continuous professional development.
Present at the ceremony were senior officials of the Ministry of Health, including the Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Officer, as well as representatives of the Chinese Embassy, members of the Chinese medical team, and staff of the Friendship Hospital.
Speaking at the event, Wang Peng, Counselor for Commercial and Economic Cooperation at the Chinese Embassy, described the hub as a tangible outcome of Sierra Leone-China health cooperation. He said it aligns with broader China-Africa exchange programs focused on skills transfer and sustainable development of the health sector.
Ministry of Health officials welcomed the partnership, noting that the center will help bridge gaps in nursing capacity. They said it will introduce standardized training, modern clinical practices, and improved service delivery systems in hospitals and health facilities nationwide.
Health authorities further stated that the hub will equip nurses with updated technical expertise and management knowledge to enhance the quality of patient care, while supporting long-term reforms in health workforce development.
The facility is designed to function as a model for continuous training, with the goal of strengthening Sierra Leone’s health system and ensuring more efficient and resilient health services.
