Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francess Alghali, has been confirmed by ECOWAS Heads of State to serve as Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security for a four-year term.
The regional appointment places Alghali at the center of ECOWAS efforts on democratic governance, conflict prevention, and security coordination across West Africa.
Her selection comes amid growing regional challenges, including unconstitutional changes of government, electoral disputes, and cross-border security threats.
Government officials say the appointment enhances Sierra Leone’s representation within the 15-member bloc and reflects the country’s commitment to promoting peace and regional integration.
Alghali served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation prior to the new role, where she led engagements on multilateral and regional affairs.
