Makeni – Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary’s Community Outreach Programme (TCOP) has launched a targeted education and engagement mission in communities surrounding Outamba-Kilimi National Park (OKNP), aiming to strengthen youth awareness of biodiversity conservation and the role of healthy ecosystems in sustaining local livelihoods.

The programme combines classroom-based learning, interactive competitions, and field-based experiences, engaging students from primary to senior secondary levels. Activities included debates, speech presentations, and poetry recitals, encouraging critical thinking and personal connection to conservation topics.

The initiative also incorporates sports and community events, using football matches and public gatherings to extend conservation messaging to a broader audience. TCOP’s approach links education, community engagement, and practical conservation, fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious individuals equipped to contribute to conservation efforts.

The programme’s impact includes increased environmental awareness, strengthened youth engagement, and improved understanding of human-wildlife interactions, particularly regarding elephant activity in the landscape.
