FREETOWN — A young man has lost his life in a devastating early morning fire in Kolleh Town, Freetown, after he attempted to put out the blaze and rescue property from the inferno.
The tragedy has once again exposed the challenges facing emergency responders in reaching densely populated communities due to poor road networks and unplanned structures.
According to residents, the fire outbreak, which is the latest in a series of recurring incidents in the community, destroyed property and left families vulnerable. They expressed frustration that fire engines often struggle to access affected areas during emergencies.
Community members said houses built closely together with combustible materials such as wood and tarpaulin allow fires to spread rapidly, while narrow footpaths prevent firefighters from reaching burning structures on time.
The National Fire Force has in the past cited traffic congestion, poor access roads and unplanned construction as major factors delaying its response to emergencies. Concerns have also been raised about inadequate equipment and limited operational resources for vulnerable communities.
Residents said the latest incident highlights the grave risks community members take when attempting to rescue lives and property during uncontrolled fires.
They are calling for urgent measures to improve fire prevention, strengthen emergency response and enhance safety in Freetown’s overcrowded communities.
