The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador Rtd. Col. Alhaji Fanday Turay Esq., at the weekend provided major humanitarian relief to 400 ex-service personnel and families of fallen heroes at Benguema Barracks.
The beneficiaries, including widows and dependents of soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, received bags of rice, transportation support and financial allowances to cushion their economic hardship.
The intervention, held on Saturday, 11th October 2026 at Benguema Barracks, Waterloo, is aimed at recognizing the sacrifices of former service members while supporting vulnerable families facing rising cost of living.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Minister Turay said the contributions of ex-service personnel to the nation must never be forgotten and that government and well-meaning citizens have a responsibility to stand with them.
“Our ex-service personnel have made valuable contributions to this country, and we must continue to recognise their sacrifices. We also have a responsibility to support the widows and families of those who served the nation. This assistance is a modest expression of our appreciation and commitment to their welfare,” the Minister said.
He noted that the support, though modest, would help the families meet immediate household needs at a time when prices of essential commodities continue to put pressure on homes.
Representative of the beneficiaries, Alimamy Mansaray, welcomed the gesture, describing it as timely and reassuring.
“We are grateful to the Honorable Minister for this support, particularly the provision of rice, transportation assistance and allowances. This gesture brings relief to our members and reminds us that the sacrifices of former service personnel and the needs of their families are still being recognised,” Mansaray said.
The event underscored the need for sustained national solidarity and practical support for ex-service personnel, widows and dependents, beyond ceremonial recognition.
Observers say the Waterloo intervention serves as a reminder that honouring fallen heroes requires concrete action to address the welfare of those they left behind.
