Zambian Woman Arrested for Cocaine Smuggling at Freetown Airport

November 16, 2025 – A Zambian national, Miriam Shamane, was apprehended at Freetown International Airport early this morning for allegedly smuggling suspected cocaine. The 30-year-old traveler, carrying a Zambian passport (No. 2Q077540), was intercepted around 08:30 hours while in transit on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

During routine baggage screening, airport security officials detected suspicious substances concealed within her luggage. The discovery triggered a collaborative investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Office of National Security (ONS), Sierra Leone Police, National Revenue Authority Customs Service, Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), and Westminster Airport personnel.

Following the inspection, authorities confiscated the substances and detained Shamane, alongside her passport, for further questioning by the police.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges of ensuring airport security and combating drug trafficking at Freetown International Airport, highlighting the critical need for ongoing vigilance and cooperation among security agencies.
