The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) has successfully secured the release of two vulnerable mothers from the Sierra Leone Correctional Service in Freetown. This achievement follows a recent monitoring visit by CHRDI, which revealed a concerning trend of women being detained for minor offenses involving sums as low as 2,000 to 5,000 Leones. Many of these cases showed little progress in trial proceedings over several months.
With the strategic support of Sierra Network Radio and contributions from members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora, CHRDI intervened to facilitate the release of the detained women. Importantly, their freedom has also allowed two young children, including a three-week-old infant, to be reunited with their families.
CHRDI expressed gratitude to the Sierra Leone Correctional Service for its cooperation and underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling systemic issues within the justice system. “Change is possible when we work together,” the organization affirmed.
