A small coastal fishing community in Sorogbema Chiefdom is pleading for government intervention, citing a severe lack of basic social services. Mende Camp-Kru Town, with a population of approximately 500 people, relies heavily on fishing for survival, but residents say their livelihoods are under threat due to inadequate infrastructure.

Town Chief Messie Pabai described the situation as “critical”, highlighting the absence of safe drinking water, healthcare, and education. Residents must travel eight miles to access the nearest health facility, posing significant risks, especially in emergencies.

The community’s only water sources are locally dug pits, deemed unsafe for consumption. Chief Pabai appealed for urgent assistance, citing tensions with Ghanaian fishermen who have allegedly destroyed local fishing nets, further straining the community’s income.

Senior Fisheries Officer Elkeline Tiwoma Kposawa confirmed complaints from both local and Ghanaian fishermen, assuring efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Residents are frustrated that despite paying local taxes and fishing license fees, they have seen no improvement in services. They urge the government and development partners to act swiftly to provide essential amenities and support sustainable livelihoods.
