The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) has launched a nationwide initiative aimed at boosting the livestock sector and improving livelihoods for over 62,000 households. The Livestock and Livelihoods Development Project (LLDP) will focus on strengthening veterinary services, enhancing market systems, and promoting agribusiness.

The project, implemented in 11 districts, targets smallholder livestock farmers, with a special emphasis on women, youth, and persons with disabilities. “The selection of these districts was based on factors such as poverty levels, vulnerability, and market potential,” said LLDP Project Coordinator Tejan Koroma.

The initiative has already achieved 40% female participation, surpassing its initial target of 30%. Women stakeholders, including Mariatu Songo Kanu, District Regional Coordinator of Women, have welcomed the project, urging women to take full advantage of the opportunity.

The LLDP is jointly funded by international organizations, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The project aligns with Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan and the Feed Salone Programme, aiming to reduce poverty and achieve food self-sufficiency.
