The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Dr. Philip John Kanu, has been suspended with immediate effect following allegations of staff recruitment irregularities. The suspension, announced in a letter from the Office of the President, follows a high-level probe into the university’s hiring practices.
The investigation uncovered widespread manipulation of interview scores, with several candidates being downgraded without justification. At least 11 applicants were affected, and interview panel members testified that their submitted scores had been altered by unknown persons.
Dr. Kanu, who has been with MMTU since its inception, has faced previous controversies, including a 2022 suspension over alleged hate speech and tribalism. Although cleared of those allegations, the current investigation has led to his removal pending further action.
During his suspension, Dr. Kanu is required to hand over university property and refrain from official duties or contacting staff. Dr. Mohamed Ali Jalloh has been appointed to oversee the university’s operations.
The suspension reflects concerns over Dr. Kanu’s leadership style, described as autocratic, and its impact on the institution’s environment.
