The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) and the Mano River Union (MRU) Secretariat have agreed to formalize their partnership to address human trafficking and migration issues in the region. The agreement, reached during a meeting in Freetown, aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two institutions.

The meeting, led by HRCSL Executive Secretary Joseph Kamara, brought together senior officials from both institutions to discuss the transnational nature of migration and trafficking in the Mano River basin. “Effective regional partnerships are essential to fulfilling our human rights protection role,” Kamara said.

The proposed partnership will focus on joint investigations, cross-border complaint handling, and policy harmonization. MRU Secretary General Ambassador Simeon M B. Moribah emphasized the union’s convening power, noting that it can organize regional meetings and promote dialogue among member states.

The partnership aims to improve regional responsiveness to migration crises and trafficking networks, providing more consistent protection of rights across borders. The next steps include submitting HRCSL’s mandate documentation and drafting a cooperation framework for MRU consideration.
