Police Nab Nine in Falaba Over Suspected Illegal Entry from Mali

Police in Falaba District have arrested nine commercial motorbike riders and several passengers suspected of illegally entering Sierra Leone from Mali during a targeted security operation on Monday.

The arrests were made in Mongo Bendugu as officers stepped up patrols along the country’s northern border to curb unauthorized crossings and unregulated movement of people and livestock. All suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.

According to police, the group was intercepted while attempting to use informal routes commonly linked to illicit cross-border activity. Authorities said the operation is part of a wider push to tighten border controls amid rising concerns over undocumented migration and the unapproved entry of cattle.

Residents in border communities have repeatedly flagged the influx of foreign nationals and herders entering through unofficial crossing points in Falaba and neighboring districts. Local leaders warn that unchecked crossings could create security, economic and environmental pressures.

Police have not disclosed the identities of those arrested or said whether charges related to immigration violations or trafficking will be brought.

Law enforcement officials said the latest arrests reflect ongoing efforts to enforce immigration and trade regulations and to ensure that all cross-border movement follows legal channels.
