Health Authorities Confirm Measles Outbreak, Urge Vaccination as Cases Hit 41

Sierra Leone’s health authorities have confirmed a measles outbreak, with 41 cases recorded across eight districts between January and April 2026.

The National Public Health Agency and the Ministry of Health said Tuesday that testing shows a 75% positivity rate nationwide. Western Area Urban is the hardest hit, accounting for 15 of the confirmed cases, including nine reported in April alone. Officials say the spike points to active community transmission in Freetown.

Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes near others. Health officials warned that the disease can cause serious complications and death, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

The public is advised to seek medical care immediately if symptoms appear, including high fever, red watery eyes, runny nose, cough, or rash. Citizens can call the toll-free emergency line 117 or visit the nearest health facility.

Authorities stressed that vaccination is the most effective protection. Two free doses of the measles vaccine are available at government health centers nationwide, and parents are urged to ensure their children are immunized.

In response, government field teams are being deployed to Western Area Urban and other affected districts to identify and treat cases. Ring vaccination around confirmed infections is also underway to contain spread. Infection prevention measures at health facilities have been strengthened, and officials said regular updates will follow as investigations continue.

The government said there is no cause for panic, noting that measles is preventable and treatable when caught early. Communities are being asked to cooperate with health teams to protect families and stop further transmission.
