The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has partnered with Farm Input Promotions Africa to deliver 5,000 improved chicks and poultry feed to smallholder farmers in five districts, marking a major push under the Small Pack Initiative.
Under the program, 1,000 five-week-old chicks were distributed to each of Bo, Kenema, Port Loko, Karene, and Moyamba. The rollout targets 1,200 farmers and combines input supply with hands-on training in basic livestock management.
FIPS-Africa, based in Kenya, funded the initiative. MAFS’ Extension Division is leading implementation through the Village-Based Advisors model, which places trained local advisors directly in farming communities.
Officials say the intervention is designed to improve household nutrition, raise incomes, and strengthen food security — with deliberate focus on women and youth who dominate rural poultry farming.
Beneficiary Musu Kamara of Bo shared her experience: “I got five chicks, feed, and training. My previous birds were stunted and sold cheap. These improved breeds grow faster and bigger. The training showed me how to manage them properly for food and income.”
The distribution supports the government’s Feed Salone commitment to equip grassroots farmers with better breeds, technical knowledge, and sustainable practices.
Deputy Minister 2, Mr. Sahr Hemore, Director of Extension Mr. Alpha Yayah Mansaray, NAFFSL President Madam Yatta Sama, and district stakeholders led the symbolic handover to eligible farmers.
