China Donates 18,000 Lassa Fever Drug Ampoules to Boost Sierra Leone’s Outbreak Response

Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health has received 18,000 ampoules of Lassa fever medication donated by the Chinese Embassy, a move health officials say will strengthen the country’s readiness for potential outbreaks.

The consignment is expected to close treatment gaps and improve protection for frontline workers and communities most at risk. Officials said priority districts include Kenema, Bo, and Kailahun, which record the highest burden of the disease.

“Partnerships like these remind us that global health security is a shared responsibility, and China has always stood by Sierra Leone both during health outbreaks as well as during quiet moments. We remain very grateful,” said Dr. Sartie Kenneh, Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Kenneh received the drugs on behalf of Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby. He thanked the Government and people of China for their consistent support to Sierra Leone’s health sector.

Lassa fever remains a seasonal public health threat in Sierra Leone, with cases peaking during the dry season. The Eastern and Southern Provinces bear the heaviest load, with Kenema and Kailahun among the worst-hit areas.

Health authorities say the donation will reinforce surveillance, treatment capacity, and community protection as the country continues efforts to reduce Lassa fever mortality.
