The Residents of Zimmi and Kpakedu will soon stop traveling long distances for medical care, as government nears completion of two new 100-bed hospitals in Pujehun District.

The facilities, built with support from development partners, are aimed at bringing healthcare closer to underserved communities and easing pressure on the district’s main government hospital.

Deputy Minister of Health Prof. Charles Senesie announced this during the Civic Day Series in Pujehun. He said the projects reflect President Julius Maada Bio’s directive to expand health infrastructure and ensure quality care reaches every Sierra Leonean.

“This is about bringing healthcare closer to the people. Zimmi and Kpakedu residents will no longer trek for hours to access basic medical services,” Prof. Senesie said.

He added that government’s health reforms in Pujehun extend beyond buildings. The district has introduced HPV vaccines for girls, opened its first dental unit, and maintained supply of essential medicines under the Free Healthcare Initiative. Two hundred healthcare workers have been recruited and posted to the district, with more recruitment ongoing.

Prof. Senesie also highlighted national progress in reducing maternal mortality. He said Sierra Leone is gaining international recognition, and government is intensifying efforts through the “300 Days of Activism” campaign to reach zero maternal deaths.

Once operational, the Zimmi and Kpakedu 100-bed hospitals will cut travel time for patients, strengthen local health systems, and advance government’s agenda to decentralize medical services nationwide.
