A 30-year prison sentence was handed down Monday to a single mother of three after she admitted to possession and distribution of nearly 1,000 wraps of cannabis.

Isha Munu appeared before Justice Andrew S.C. Johnson at the High Court in Freetown, where she pleaded guilty to two counts under the National Drugs Control Act, 2008. The charges stemmed from her arrest on 21 December 2025 at Mount Aureol, when police found her with 980 wraps of Cannabis Sativa weighing 600.5 grams.

The prosecution, led by State Counsel A.I. Kamara, charged Munu with unlawful possession under Section 8(a) and dealing in a prohibited drug under Section 7(c) of Act No. 10 of 2008.

In mitigation, Defence Counsel M.Y. Conteh urged the court to consider Munu’s circumstances. He told the bench that she entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity, expressing remorse and avoiding a lengthy trial. Conteh added that Munu is a first-time offender and the sole provider for her three children, asking the court to temper justice with mercy.

Passing sentence on 15 June 2026, Justice Johnson said the court acknowledged Munu’s early plea but stressed the gravity of drug offences. “Unlawful possession and dealing in prohibited drugs remain serious crimes that the courts must continue to discourage,” he said.

Munu received five years for unlawful possession and 30 years for dealing. Justice Johnson ordered the terms to run concurrently, effective from the date she was remanded.
