FREETOWN – Violence that broke out in central Freetown on Sunday night has left three people reportedly dead, after a local football match triggered clashes that spread to a political office on Wellington Street.
The unrest began on September 13, 2026, following a match between Kossoh Town FC and Kroo Town Road FC. According to residents, some supporters of Kroo Town Road FC became agitated after the loss and later moved toward the office of APC flagbearer aspirant Sheik Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, also known as Jagaban.
Witnesses said the office was stoned, with claims that the aspirant’s support for Kossoh Town FC during the match had angered the group. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the deployment of the Sierra Leone Police.
Accounts from the Kroo Town Road area indicate the confrontation started near a burial ceremony at a mosque on Siaka Stevens Street, opposite Upper Brook Street, before moving toward Wellington Street, off Siaka Stevens Street.
During the police intervention, three people were reportedly shot and later died from their injuries. The identities of the deceased and the exact details of how the shootings occurred have not been independently verified.
The Sierra Leone Police has confirmed it has opened an investigation to determine the sequence of events and those responsible.
The incident has sparked concern over rising tensions linked to football rivalries and the safety of political offices in public spaces. Authorities are calling for calm as investigations continue.
