ACCRA – Sierra Leone is turning to Ghana for technical guidance as it prepares to build a $55 million industrial fishing port, with a high-level delegation from Freetown concluding a familiarisation tour of Tema Port facilities on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The delegation, led by Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Hon. Princess Dugba, held talks with Ghana’s Minister of Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe, before touring key operations at Tema Port.
Welcoming the Sierra Leone team, Minister Nikpe described the visit as timely and mutually beneficial.
“This visit creates an opportunity for both countries to learn from each other and adopt good practices and policies,” he said. “Only Africans can support each other in solving the problems affecting Africans.”
He pledged his Ministry’s full support to ensure the visit delivers practical results.
Speaking during the engagement, Minister Dugba thanked Ghana for the warm reception. She explained that Sierra Leone’s new project is a $55 million fishing industrial port funded by a grant from the Chinese government. The facility is expected to be constructed and completed within the next two years.
“Ghana has been operating its port facilities for years. This visit will enable our team to identify areas of technical cooperation and knowledge sharing,” Minister Dugba said.
The Sierra Leone delegation also met with Ghana’s Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, and Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Ghana Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba.
The tour focused on exchanging knowledge on port upgrading, cargo handling, waste management, and port operations. Officials said the lessons learned will directly inform the design and management of Sierra Leone’s new facility.
The proposed port will include a jetty, marine house, waste management system, and a modern fish market. Ministry officials say the project is expected to help Sierra Leone tap into the blue economy, create jobs, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen the fisheries sector.
