BOSTON, Saturday, September 20, 2026 — First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has been honoured by two of the world’s most prestigious universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), for her outstanding leadership and service to Africa.
The honour was conferred at the Global Catalyst Summit in the United States, where the First Lady was recognised for her impactful work in social development, women’s empowerment and community transformation across the continent.
Receiving the award, Dr. Fatima Bio dedicated the recognition to the people of Africa, saying it reflects the collective resilience and courage of women, girls and young people.
“This recognition is not mine alone. I accept it on behalf of the women, girls, young people, and communities across Africa whose courage, resilience, and hopes continue to inspire my work,” she said.
She described being welcomed and recognised by Harvard and MIT as “both a privilege and a responsibility,” and pledged to continue building bridges between African-led initiatives and global academic institutions.
The First Lady noted that stronger collaboration between Africa and international centres of learning is critical to advancing key sectors such as women’s health, education and youth empowerment.
“I believe that meaningful collaboration with Africa is essential to shaping a healthier, more equitable global future,” she added.
She also commended the organisers of the Global Catalyst Summit for creating a platform that celebrates African leadership, innovation and homegrown solutions to global challenges.
