In a significant step towards enhancing the protection of vulnerable women and children, Dr. Isata Mahoi, the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, convened a meeting with the Community of Practice to discuss the development of a new National Safeguarding Policy. This initiative aims to address the pressing need for safeguarding measures, particularly in rural communities that currently lack essential support.
During the meeting, Dr. Mahoi emphasized the importance of ensuring that safeguarding information reaches those in remote areas. She also revealed that discussions are underway with UNICEF to create a dashboard for tracking child protection issues across the country. This tool aims to provide valuable data that can inform policy and practice.
While the government is set to oversee the implementation of the National Safeguarding Policy, Dr. Mahoi highlighted the crucial role that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other partners will play in its rollout. To further refine the policy, she proposed organizing a roundtable with key stakeholders to gather input and foster collaboration.
The Community of Practice expressed their unwavering support for the Ministry’s efforts and committed to working closely together to ensure the policy’s success and its positive impact on safeguarding communities nationwide.
This initiative comes at a critical time, as the need for effective safeguarding measures to protect the most vulnerable in society becomes increasingly urgent.
