The case of Abdul Kpaka, a businessman accused of beating his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara, leading to her death, took a significant turn in court last week.

This case first gained widespread attention in August 2024, prompting Kpaka’s arrest and subsequent charges following serious allegations that surfaced on social media. After an initial hearing in Magistrate Court, Magistrate Santigie Bangure referred the case to the High Court for further proceedings.

In the High Court, defense attorney AT Koroma requested a jury trial; however, prosecutor Yusif Isac Sesay opposed this, arguing that the trial should be conducted by a judge alone. Justice Momoh Jah Stevens, who was presiding over the case, sided with the prosecutor, ruling that the trial would proceed without a jury. He also denied Kpaka bail due to the severity of the charges.

The trial has faced delays, with several witnesses already testifying. Recently, a Supreme Court ruling addressing procedural issues brought renewed attention to the case. In a surprising development, Justice Alfred Ganda replaced Justice Stevens. Under his jurisdiction, a jury composed of 12 members—11 men and 1 woman—was seated to review the evidence.

During the latest court session, prosecutor Yusif Isac Sesay requested additional time to secure more witnesses, while the defense urged the court to expedite the proceedings. Justice Ganda declined to grant bail to Kpaka and ordered him to return to the male correctional center. The case has been adjourned until March 7, 2025.

The trial continues to attract public interest, with many eagerly anticipating the next steps in this ongoing legal battle.
