A new treason trial commenced on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the High Court before Justice Alhaji Momoh Jah Stevens. The defendants, Alie Badara Kanu and Thaimu Bangura, are accused of conspiring to overthrow the government.

Key testimony was provided by Inspector Abubakarr Kargbo from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, who detailed the investigation and presented evidence, including a voluntary caution statement from the first accused, Alie Badara Kanu. The prosecution alleges that Kanu, a retired military captain, and Bangura, along with unnamed accomplices, were involved in a plot to destabilize the government between June 24, 2023, and June 29, 2024.

Inspector Kargbo recounted receiving a treason report on April 21, 2024, and subsequently conducting two interviews with Kanu. During these interviews, Kanu allegedly disclosed details about the conspiracy, including an intended coup on June 19, 2024, coinciding with the conclusion of the TriKanu. However, Kanu denied the treason allegations, asserting that he had been working in construction since his military retirement. He admitted to meeting individuals discussing the overthrow of both the APC and SLPP parties, but maintained he was skeptical about the plan’s viability.

The prosecution also introduced evidence obtained from Kanu’s mobile phone, which was analyzed by the Cyber Unit, though the specifics of these findings were not detailed in the initial testimony.

Defense Counsel S. Turay cross-examined Inspector Kargbo, questioning the evidence presented. The trial is set to continue, with further witnesses expected to be called. Both Kanu and Bangura remain in custody, and if convicted, they face severe penalties under Sierra Leonean law.
