The Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), is set to revolutionize the educational landscape in Sierra Leone by providing high-speed internet and solar energy to 403 schools nationwide. This initiative, known as Project Giga, is being undertaken under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio.
The primary objective of Project Giga is to promote a digital learning environment that offers free access to online resources for both students and teachers. This project seeks to address critical infrastructural challenges in education by delivering reliable internet connectivity and solar-powered energy systems, thereby creating opportunities for growth and development within local communities. Additionally, the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide in Sierra Leone, fostering a more equitable and inclusive educational system for all. The government anticipates that these advancements will enhance academic quality, improve teaching methods, and prepare students for a technology-driven future.
However, some parents have expressed concerns regarding their children’s ability to stay focused in class with increased internet access. Aminata Kamara, a mother of five with two children in primary school, one in university, and another in secondary school, stated, “While I appreciate the benefits of Project Giga, I’m worried about how my kids will manage distractions online. It’s crucial that the schools implement measures to ensure that students remain focused on their lessons and use the internet wisely.”
Similarly, Peterson Momoh, a parent of two primary school children, voiced his apprehensions: “Providing internet access is great, but I fear that my children might get sidetracked by social media and games instead of concentrating on their studies. It’s important that there are guidelines in place to help them stay on track.”
With these pivotal changes underway, the government aims to uplift the standard of education while also addressing the valid concerns of parents regarding students’ focus and engagement in their studies during this digital transformation.
