Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has initiated a nationwide monitoring exercise to assess the treatment and prevention measures for Mpox in hospitals across Freetown and regional areas. This initiative, led by the Directorate of Monitoring and Research, aims to ensure that public health measures adhere to human rights standards during the ongoing Mpox response.
During a visit to the Kingtom Police Hospital, HRCSL representatives learned that the facility admitted its first Mpox case on February 5, 2025, and has since treated a total of 406 cases. The hospital operates a dedicated 22-bed Mpox unit, currently housing 14 patients (9 male and 5 female).
At Connaught Teaching Hospital, which caters to severe Mpox cases, officials reported a total of 50 cases. The hospital’s Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU) has seen 14 deaths and 16 recoveries since April 14, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Police Training School (PTS) Mpox Treatment Centre in Hastings has recorded 228 cases (122 male and 106 female) since its establishment on May 18, 2025. The centre has successfully treated and discharged 135 patients, with no deaths reported.
Additionally, the China Friendship Hospital at Jui is currently serving as a holding centre, referring all Mpox cases to the PTS Treatment Centre.
The HRCSL’s monitoring exercise aims to gather insights from these visits to ensure that public health responses effectively align with human rights standards during the Mpox outbreak.
