FREETOWN—Dr. Isata Mahoi, the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, has reported a concerning increase in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases for the year 2024, with a total of 2,771 incidents documented. This announcement was made during the government’s weekly press conference at the Miatta Conference Centre.
Out of these reported cases, 2,744 involved female victims, while 27 were male. The statistics reveal that 2,607 incidents were classified as sexual abuse, with 164 identified as physical abuse. Disturbingly, the youngest victim of sexual abuse was a mere two months old, while a nine-month-old infant was the youngest victim of physical abuse.
Minister Mahoi attributed the rise in reported cases to progressive legal reforms introduced by the government, which have empowered victims to come forward. “These reforms have encouraged many to speak out about their experiences,” she stated.
To assist victims, the Minister highlighted the availability of a toll-free hotline (116), which connects individuals to service providers and guides them to one-stop centers for support. She also commended community organizations, particularly the Rainbow Initiative, for their ongoing efforts in supporting GBV survivors.
In addition to addressing GBV, Minister Mahoi discussed the investigation into a missing child at Cottage Hospital. She confirmed that all nurses on duty at the time are currently in police custody as the investigation continues. “We are committed to ensuring justice and accountability in this case,” she affirmed.
In conclusion, Dr. Mahoi called for stronger judicial action and community support to enhance the fight against GBV, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to protect vulnerable individuals in society.
