Thousands of young people across Sierra Leone are set to receive a one-time cash support of $300 from the National Youth Commission (NYC) as part of a new initiative aimed at boosting youth-led businesses and job creation.

The program, spearheaded by NYC Commissioner Ahmed Atata Mansaray, will provide financial assistance to 8,000 individuals aged 18 to 35 who either operate or intend to start small household businesses. The total funding for this initiative amounts to $2.4 million.

To qualify for the cash support, applicants must possess a National ID. Payments are expected to be disbursed in the first or second week of July, contingent upon the completion of all necessary paperwork. Beneficiaries will include 1,500 young people from each of the following regions: Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Port Loko, with additional recipients to be selected from Freetown and other towns.

The NYC is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Youth to ensure that the funds reach the intended recipients and that the process is efficient and well-organized. The overarching goal is to empower more young people to start or expand their businesses and create jobs within their communities.

Commissioner Mansaray emphasized the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly regarding the participation of girls and young women. This initiative aligns with the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act passed in 2022, which promotes equal opportunities for women across various sectors.

This new program is part of the government’s broader strategy to create more opportunities for youth and invest in their future.
