On Thursday, June 26, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) visited the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom to strategize on reducing corrupt practices within the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

The ACC team, led by Deputy Commissioner Augustine Foday Ngobie, commended the police for their efforts in crime reduction. However, Ngobie highlighted that the actions of certain officers are undermining these achievements. He emphasized the need for collaboration, particularly in training and in-service programs, to effectively combat corruption within the force.

Mr. Joshua Nicole, a Board Member of the ACC, referenced a recent Afrobarometer survey that ranked the SLP as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country. Despite this, he acknowledged the police’s progress in reducing crime and proposed joint training initiatives to directly address corruption issues.

In response, IGP Sellu welcomed the ACC’s initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the police’s image. He noted that the SLP has already taken measures to combat corruption, including dismissals and sanctions against officers found guilty of corrupt practices. Sellu also highlighted the roles of the Integrity Management Committee (IMC) and the Complaint, Discipline, and Internal Investigation Department (CDIID) as critical components in the fight against corruption. He expressed his determination to work closely with the ACC to develop effective strategies to tackle these challenges.

ACC Board Members praised the SLP for its efforts in maintaining safety and security, encouraging the police to continue their commendable work.
