In a significant event marking the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Melrose Karminty, delivered an urgent address themed “Human Trafficking is Organized Crime – End the Exploitation.”
Minister Karminty highlighted the substantial advancements made over the past seven years in the fight against human trafficking, emphasizing the importance of compassion and survivor-led initiatives. “We can no longer remain silent. Survivors must be empowered to voice their experiences, influence policy, and raise awareness,” she asserted.
A pivotal highlight of the occasion was the launch of the Trafficking and Bursting Survivor Network Business, designed to empower survivors to act as advocates for change within their communities. This initiative will provide essential resources and support to individuals affected by trafficking. Karminty urged a collaborative approach from government bodies, civil society, and development partners to bolster the newly established Victims of Human Trafficking Trust Fund.
This fund aims to support the resettlement of returnees and enhance prevention efforts in vulnerable communities. Karminty called for “intentional and coordinated responses” to effectively combat trafficking and expressed gratitude for the collaboration of international partners, including the United Nations in Sierra Leone, the International Organization for Migration, and the U.S. Embassy in Freetown.
In closing, Karminty declared, “Trafficking is a battle that the world is now better prepared to win.”
Echoing her sentiments, Attorney General Alpha Sesay and the UN Representative in Sierra Leone reinforced the necessity of justice and survivor-centered reforms. Sesay pointed to recent legal advancements and ongoing prosecutions while advocating for broader reforms to tackle underlying issues such as poverty, inequality, and corruption.
The unified message from all speakers was clear: the fight against human trafficking must end, and dignity, freedom, and justice must be ensured for all.
