The Government of Sierra Leone has taken a significant step towards promoting digital inclusion by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a coalition of youth-led and community-based organizations. This strategic partnership aims to foster technology-driven development throughout the country. The signing ceremony took place at State House in Freetown and included key stakeholders from both government and civil society, featuring representatives from organizations such as Matarix Brotherhood, Off White Youth Organization, Queenbeez Foundation, and Apex Foundation.
The MOU outlines a collaborative framework designed to boost digital literacy and improve access to technology, particularly for young people. As part of this initiative, a nationwide rollout of free digital skills training programs will be implemented, with partner organizations tasked with community engagement and program delivery.
Mr. Jasper Sembie, Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Directorate of Science and Technology, underscored the critical role of technology in governance and education. He noted the government’s ongoing initiatives to modernize public institutions and encourage innovation at the grassroots level.
During the ceremony, Mr. Augustine Koroma, representing Apex Foundation and the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) Secretariat, described the partnership as a significant enhancement to the government’s education agenda. He praised the advancements made under the FQSE program and viewed the MOU as a vital tool for bridging the digital divide.
Miss Fatama M. Sumaila, Coordinator of Queenbeez Foundation, expressed her appreciation for the collaboration, committing to ongoing support for national digital empowerment initiatives. Other leaders echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the partnership’s timely and essential nature for sustainable community development.
Officials believe that this MOU will be instrumental in achieving the country’s digital transformation goals by leveraging local networks to implement inclusive, tech-based initiatives. The government views this agreement as a model for future partnerships that align with national development priorities.
