The U.S. government has unveiled the CBP Home Mobile App, an initiative by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), aimed at assisting noncitizens who have overstayed their visas or are unlawfully present in the country to voluntarily depart the United States with dignity and structure.
Following a proclamation issued on June 4, 2025, which placed restrictions on certain visa categories for Sierra Leoneans and others, the CBP Home App offers a new alternative to traditional immigration enforcement. The app enables eligible individuals to register for voluntary self-departure, promoting “safe and orderly” exits while significantly reducing the need for arrests, detentions, or restraints.
Described as a free and user-friendly platform, the app allows users to arrange their departure on their own terms. Participants in the program are offered substantial incentives, including government-covered travel expenses, forgiveness of fines related to their overstayed visas, and a $1,000 “exit bonus” to assist with reintegration into their home countries. This initiative represents a balanced approach to border enforcement, prioritizing law, order, and human dignity.
However, the program has specific eligibility criteria. Not all individuals qualify; criteria include immigration history, criminal background, and national security considerations. Those currently facing active criminal proceedings or deemed a public safety risk are excluded from participation.
Immigration policy experts suggest that this program could simultaneously reduce the number of individuals subject to removal orders and alleviate the strain on immigration detention systems. The long-term impact on immigration policy remains to be seen.
The CBP Home Mobile App is now available for download on both Android and iOS devices. Users must create an account, verify their identity, and follow a guided process to initiate their departure.
