A teacher from the Kenema Government Secondary School was apprehended during a drug operation conducted by the Transnational Organised Crime Unit on Monday afternoon. The raid, which occurred at approximately 1:50 PM, was spearheaded by Detective Sergeant 9441 Kamara following actionable intelligence.
The suspect, identified as Ishmael Kallon, resides at #5 Hassanatu Street and is a registered teacher at the school. During the operation, law enforcement officials discovered 31 polythene bags and 20 sachets containing a substance believed to be Kush, a potent synthetic drug that has been increasingly prevalent in Sierra Leone.
Eyewitnesses reported that Kallon appeared physically weak and unsteady at the time of his arrest, raising concerns about potential prolonged drug use. He was taken into custody, and police are in the process of obtaining a formal statement from him as part of the ongoing investigation.
This incident highlights the escalating challenges posed by the drug trade in Kenema, where Kush and other illegal substances are allegedly trafficked and sold in significant quantities. Reports indicate that drug dens operate openly in various parts of the city, sometimes with the complicity of individuals within law enforcement.
Prior efforts to combat this issue have been noted, particularly by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Francis Moses Tower, who had previously focused on narcotics enforcement in the region. His approach has drawn comparisons to that of former AIG Alfred Karrow Kamara, known for his rigorous stance against drug-related activities.
Despite these initiatives, the community continues to grapple with the dire consequences of Kush use, including frequent overdose deaths. Families throughout Kenema are increasingly alarmed as the drug’s reach extends among both youth and adults.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities have yet to disclose further information regarding Kallon’s charges or his upcoming court appearance. More updates are anticipated as the case develops.
