The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has donated 67,200 doses of the Mpox vaccine to the Ministry of Health, marking a pivotal advancement in the nation’s battle against the disease.

Acquired through GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, these vaccines are intended to enhance the country’s prevention strategies significantly.

The Embassy highlighted the impressive progress in managing the outbreak, with reported cases declining from a peak of 200 per day in April to single digits by August. This success has been bolstered by over $2 million in U.S. aid and the dedicated efforts of the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Agency, and frontline healthcare workers.

During the handover ceremony, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey stated, “Vaccines are a critical tool in stopping this outbreak. By strengthening prevention, protecting frontline workers, and reducing transmission, these doses bring us closer to achieving zero Mpox cases.”

The Embassy reiterated that this donation underscores the enduring partnership between the United States and the country in advancing public health and combating infectious diseases.
