The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) is poised to transform traffic enforcement with the launch of an innovative smart payment system designed specifically for traffic offenders. This initiative marks a significant leap toward digitizing the authority’s operations, enhancing transparency, and improving overall service delivery.

Traditionally, processing traffic fines in Sierra Leone has relied on a manual system fraught with delays, inefficiencies, and limited accountability. The new digital platform aims to tackle these issues by allowing offenders to pay their fines online or through authorized agents. This approach is expected to reduce administrative bottlenecks and simplify the payment process for all parties involved.

Key features of the smart payment system include real-time transaction tracking and automated record-keeping, which will ensure greater accuracy and transparency in managing traffic fines. During a recent training session for the Enforcement Corps on how to operate the new system, Deputy Executive Director Josie Abraham Scott-Manga underscored the authority’s commitment to embracing digital technology. “The management has worked tirelessly to digitize every sector within the Authority,” she said, adding that the new handheld devices and smart payment platform will not only streamline enforcement activities but also promote accountability.

Enforcement Director Augustine Kaitongi expressed his enthusiasm for the long-awaited digital solution, stating, “We’ve been yearning for such innovations for a long time. This platform will generate receipts for fines, provide real-time data on traffic violations, facilitate vehicle record tracking, and ultimately improve transparency in enforcement.”

Kaitongi also emphasized the importance of training personnel to effectively operate the new system, noting that skilled operators are critical for its success. “Effective management of this technology depends on well-trained staff,” he stated.

The technology partner’s CEO, representing Smart System Company, elaborated on the system’s benefits. “This platform eliminates the need for physical ticket printing, enabling the Authority to monitor enforcement activities more accurately while providing daily data on traffic offenses, which is vital for strategic planning.”

The introduction of this smart payment system highlights Sierra Leone’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance traffic management, boost revenue, and uphold transparency and accountability within the enforcement framework.
