Connaught Hospital has achieved a major medical milestone after successfully carrying out its first brain tumour surgery, marking a new chapter for specialized care in Sierra Leone.
The operation was performed under the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex Neurosurgery Programme at the country’s premier referral hospital.
It was jointly conducted by Dr. Allieu Kamara, Neurotrauma Surgeon, and Dr. Ibrahim Jalloh, a Sierra Leonean neurosurgeon based in the United Kingdom and a key partner in the programme.
Hospital authorities said the patient is recovering well, a sign of the hospital’s growing capacity to deliver complex, life-saving procedures locally.
The surgery reflects ongoing government investment in tertiary healthcare, as well as strategic partnerships aimed at building local expertise and reducing the need for overseas referrals.
The Ministry of Health hailed the achievement as a breakthrough for the health sector. In a statement, the Ministry commended the neurosurgical team, hospital management, and all partners for their role in strengthening specialized services in the country.
“This milestone demonstrates what is possible when we invest in people, equipment, and partnerships,” the Ministry said.
The success is expected to pave the way for more advanced neurosurgical interventions to be done in Sierra Leone going forward.
