Geneva Conventions: 75 Years of Upholding Humanitarian Law

On Monday, August 26, 2024, a high-level panel discussion was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. The event brought together representatives from the United Nations Security Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and humanitarian organizations to renew commitment to International Humanitarian Law.

Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the need for stronger global efforts to ensure compliance with the Geneva Conventions. ICRC President, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, reiterated the need for a renewed commitment to humanitarian principles amid an increasingly volatile global landscape.

The panel discussion, held in Geneva, Switzerland, highlighted the importance of upholding International Humanitarian Law in the face of growing violations worldwide. The event aimed to address the increasing violations of humanitarian principles and to strengthen International Humanitarian Law.

The outcome of the discussion was a unanimous pledge to strengthen International Humanitarian Law and ensure its effective implementation, with a focus on protecting civilians, respecting the rights of prisoners of war, and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
