The Minister of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Madam Kenyeh Barlay, and stakeholders from the Ministries of Energy and Environment and Climate Change visited the Sigimi Water Falls in Moyamba District on Friday, August 24, 2024. The visit aimed to assess the site’s potential for a proposed 15-megawatt hydro-electric dam, which would supply electricity to the entire district.

The project has been in the profiling stage, and the visit sought to transform it into a bankable state. Madam Barlay addressed the community, emphasizing the government’s commitment to utilizing resources for development. She acknowledged that Moyamba District has been neglected and pledged to prioritize its advancement.

The dam would provide electricity, create jobs, and attract industries. Madam Barlay also disclosed that road construction projects are underway, including the Makolo to Mabang Bridge road, and promised to address other concerns raised by the community. The community highlighted several challenges, including poor road networks, lack of healthcare facilities, and limited job opportunities.

The SLPP Chairman, Rev. Smart Senesie, assured the community that the party cares for them and will work to promote its interests. He recalled the President’s pledge to develop Moyamba District, where his mother hails from, and criticized the previous government for diverting funds meant for the hydro-electric dam to another project.
