FBC Lecturer Arraigned for Alleged Murder of Girlfriend

On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Abdul Kakpa, a 36-year-old man, made his initial appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Court No. 2, Pademba Road, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Peninsula Road in Freetown.

Kakpa was arraigned on a single count of murder, contrary to Section 1 of the offences against the person Act of 1861. During the proceedings, the accused appeared in a black attire and maintained a serious demeanor.

Deputy Assistant Registrar Hindolo Kater read out the particulars of the offense, while Chief Superintendent of Police Joan Bull, representing the prosecution, requested a short adjournment to allow for further preparation and arrangement.

The case has attracted public interest because the deceased is a personal assistant to the Mayor of Freetown, while the accused is reported to be a teaching assistant at Fourah Bay College. The first Lady, Madam Fatima Bio has joined the public chorus in calling for “justice for Sia.” The fight against domestic violence is one of the First Lady’s flagship programs.

Lead defense counsel Emmanuel Teddy Koroma, representing the accused, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the court to expedite the matter, emphasizing the accused’s right to liberty and the stakes involved. However, Prosecutor Bull objected to this submission.

Magistrate Bangura adjourned the matter to Wednesday, September 4, 2024, emphasizing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and the importance of responsible reporting by the media.
