Pupils Shine in Civic Day Quiz and Debate Competition in Bo City

Eight schools from Bo District showcased their talents in a spirited quiz and debate competition organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on October 13, 2025, as part of the Civic Day Series.

Resident Minister for the Southern Region, Mr. John Abu, addressed the students, praising the Ministry for facilitating the event. He highlighted the competition as a valuable opportunity for young individuals to demonstrate their academic prowess and encouraged all participants to engage fully.

The event aimed to enhance students’ understanding of governance, education, history, and the culture of Bo District. Competing schools included Queen of the Rosary, St. Andrew Secondary School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School, Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School, Christ the King College, Bo Commercial Secondary School, Methodist High School, and Kate McGrath School.

After two intense rounds of questioning, Jestina Smith from Queen of the Rosary School emerged as the quiz champion with 9 points. The debate segment, spanning three rounds, featured discussions on topics such as the importance of a new constitution, citizen participation in the upcoming National Census, and the role of mobile phones and AI in examinations.

The final debate topic, “Should the government prioritize Free Quality Education or the Feed Salone Program?” saw Mustapha Fambulleh from Methodist High School and Haja Mariama Mansaray from Kate McGrath School make their cases. After delivering persuasive arguments, Mustapha Fambulleh claimed victory with 29 points, advocating for the prioritization of agriculture, while Haja Mariama Mansaray finished as the runner-up with 27 points.

Winners and runners-up were awarded cash prizes along with educational materials, including school bags and exercise books. This event underscores President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to enhancing human capital development through Free Quality Education and vocational training initiatives.

The Civic Day Series will continue on October 14, featuring top government officials who will engage with the community on pressing national issues.
