Freetown, November 1, 2025 – Sierra Leone has officially taken over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for November 2025, marking its second term since rejoining the Council as a non-permanent member after a 53-year hiatus. The country succeeds the Russian Federation and will oversee the 15-member Council’s efforts to maintain international peace and security.

Sierra Leone’s first presidency occurred in August 2024, and during this term, the nation aims to pursue sustainable resolutions to global conflicts while addressing pressing international challenges. President Julius Maada Bio is also championing reforms within the Council through the African Union’s Committee of 10 (C-10), which advocates for two permanent seats with veto power and two additional non-permanent seats for Africa. This initiative seeks to rectify the historical oversight of Africa’s 1.2 billion population in the UN’s decision-making structure.

In a show of support, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres extended warm congratulations to President Bio during a recent phone call. Guterres praised Sierra Leone for its progress in governance and peacebuilding, and the two leaders discussed the political and security dynamics in West Africa and the Sahel region. The Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting in addressing ongoing security, development, and humanitarian issues in the region.

Sierra Leone’s presidency this month is set to advance a progressive agenda focused on four critical challenges affecting global stability: conflict-related food insecurity, climate-related security risks, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW), and the active inclusion of youth in peace and security decision-making.
