The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR) and the National Minerals Agency (NMA) have addressed public concerns regarding a reported deadly mining incident in Kono District, asserting that there is no official confirmation of any loss of life.

In a press release issued on October 31, 2025, the government agencies commented on the alleged event in Kumoroh, Nimikoro Chiefdom, emphasizing that any miners involved were operating illegally. The statement highlighted that those engaged in such activities were “defying established laws and safety protocols.”

Authorities reiterated their ongoing efforts to educate communities about the dangers of illegal mining. Despite numerous warnings and interventions by the MMMR, NMA, security forces, and the Environment Protection Agency, illegal mining activities have persisted, with miners reportedly resisting attempts to cease operations.

The government labeled claims of fatalities as “misinformation,” clarifying that while investigations are underway, there is currently no official confirmation of any incident resulting in loss of life.

The MMMR and NMA reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with security forces to investigate the situation and eliminate illegal mining, which poses significant risks to both human safety and the environment. The public is strongly urged to refrain from participating in these unlawful activities.
