From Pain to Peace: Sahr’s Journey to Recovery with Mercy Ship

Mercy Ships has returned to Sierra Leone for a 10-month mission to deliver over 1,400 surgeries. The first patient to receive surgery was Sahr, a 32-year-old police officer who had been suffering from a large hernia since age 20, on 4th September 2024. Sahr’s hernia had grown to the size of an avocado, causing daily pain and discomfort.

Surgeon Dr. Timothy Burandt performed the surgery, explaining that hernias in Africa tend to be larger and more complex due to lack of access to medical care. “The surgery has given Sahr a new lease on life, allowing him to return to his normal activities without pain,” Dr. Burandt said.

Sahr’s hernia had been causing him problems for over a decade, making everyday activities like eating and sitting uncomfortable. Despite his discomfort, Sahr was nervous about seeking medical help, fearing the worst. But when he heard about Mercy Ships’ return to Sierra Leone, he decided to take a chance.

Mercy Ships’ mission in Sierra Leone includes training local healthcare professionals and empowering them to provide safe surgery. First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio welcomed the hospital ship, emphasizing the importance of investing in local talent to enhance the country’s healthcare system. With Mercy Ships’ help, Sahr and many others will receive the medical care they need to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
