SLP Implements Strict Curfews and Bans for Holiday Season Security

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has introduced a stringent set of regulations aimed at maintaining public order during the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities. In an official announcement, the SLP outlined essential measures, including restrictions on noise, vehicle movement, and a ban on fireworks.

Key regulations include a strict curfew prohibiting loud music after 10:00 p.m., enforced under the Public Order Act of 1965. Additionally, the use of firearms, rockets, and any form of fireworks is entirely banned across the nation.

Street processions, carnivals, and religious marches are also prohibited unless given prior written permission from the Inspector General of Police. This extends to performances by mask devils and masquerades, which require police clearance before proceeding.

To address traffic concerns, the police have imposed significant restrictions. Notably, driving under the influence of alcohol or in unregistered vehicles is strictly forbidden. Vehicles displaying G-Plates or Temporary Vehicle Registrations (TVR) are not allowed on the roads after 6:00 p.m. Commercial motorbikes, known locally as “Okadas,” are also banned from operating in Freetown’s Central Business District during this period.

To facilitate the management of holiday crowds, designated parking areas will be available at Lumley and Aberdeen beaches, and towing vehicles will be deployed for the enforcement of traffic and parking rules.

These regulations, which blend long-standing laws with seasonal directives, will be rigorously enforced to ensure the safety of all citizens. The announcement concluded with holiday wishes from the Inspector General and the SLP, wishing the public a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in 2026.
