The Government of Sierra Leone has embarked on a significant initiative to modernize its health sector with the successful completion of a five-day workshop on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for senior health leaders. The training took place from February 2 to 6, 2026, at the Family Kingdom Resort in Freetown, organized by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the National Public Health Agency.

The workshop aimed to enhance the capabilities of senior health officials and decision-makers in data-driven planning, digital innovation, and AI-supported health systems. Notable participants included Acting Permanent Secretary Dr. Philip Kargbo, Director of Planning and Policy Dr. Tom Sesay, and Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Charles Sensesi.

During the sessions, health leaders emphasized the transformative potential of data science and AI in improving healthcare delivery across the nation. They highlighted the necessity of strong ethical governance, data privacy protection, equitable access, and measurable outcomes that truly benefit the citizens.

The program featured expert-led lectures, live demonstrations, practical exercises, and collaborative group work. Participants were tasked with developing draft policy notes and actionable recommendations to integrate data science and AI into national health systems effectively. Additionally, a national network of trainers was established to disseminate the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop to the broader health sector.

Officials from the National Public Health Agency stated that enhanced data analysis and AI capabilities will bolster early outbreak detection, facilitate real-time health trend monitoring, and optimize resource allocation.

The Ministry of Health noted that the tools introduced during the training will create a robust, evidence-based foundation for crafting innovative, equitable health policies, especially those aimed at vulnerable populations. Government representatives hailed the initiative as a milestone in the journey toward establishing a resilient, transparent, and technologically advanced health system that safeguards communities nationwide.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants in recognition of their commitment to applying and disseminating their newly acquired skills within their respective institutions. Health authorities expressed optimism that this training will act as a catalyst for long-term transformation, positioning the government as a leader in digital health innovation within the region.
