Traffic in central Freetown was thrown into disarray on Thursday after a 40-foot container truck overturned near the Congo Cross Roundabout, blocking a major artery and causing hours of congestion.
The accident happened during busy hours, prompting security forces to close off the affected section to allow for clearance and to protect road users. Motorists and commuters were forced onto alternative routes, which quickly became overwhelmed.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Road users were urged to remain patient as teams worked to remove the container and restore normal traffic flow.
The incident is the latest in a string of accidents involving heavy-duty container trucks in the capital. It has reignited calls for tighter enforcement of regulations governing the movement of large vehicles within Freetown, particularly at peak times.
Residents and drivers say the frequent crashes at busy intersections like Congo Cross highlight the urgent need for improved road safety measures and better traffic management for commercial vehicles.
