Bo Waterside, Liberia, April 19, 2026 President Julius Maada Bio joined Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. on Saturday to launch a 255-kilometre road upgrade in Liberia, a project billed as a major step for regional integration and commerce across the Mano River Union.

The project, structured under a Design, Build, Operate, and Transfer concession, covers two corridors. The Western Corridor will deliver a four-lane highway from St. Paul Bridge to Klay and on to Bo Waterside, with spurs linking Klay to Tubmanburg and Madina Junction to Robertsport. The Northern Corridor will add an 86-kilometre two-lane road from Voinjama to Mendikorma.

Speaking at the groundbreaking at Bo Waterside Border Post, President Bio called the initiative a historic milestone that will cut travel times, reduce transport costs, and ease the movement of people, goods, and services. He said the project reflects a shared commitment by both governments to strengthen economic ties and improve livelihoods.

Bio, who also chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, framed the corridor as part of West Africa’s wider economic backbone. “This is not just a road project for Liberia,” he said. “It is a regional statement, one that strengthens connectivity, promotes trade, and brings us closer to realizing a truly integrated West African market.”

Recalling past difficulties with cross-border travel, Bio said the launch marks a new chapter of cooperation. He praised Boakai’s leadership and described the project as a “dividend of peace,” made possible by stability in both countries. He urged citizens to stay committed to peace, unity, and national development, noting that security has created space for large-scale infrastructure investment.

The road is expected to boost commerce, improve mobility, and deepen sub-regional cooperation, advancing the shared goals of sustainable development and economic transformation.
