The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Timothy Kabba, has announced that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold a crucial mediation and security meeting this week to address the ongoing Yenga dispute between Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Minister Kabba confirmed that a constructive meeting took place last weekend in Yenga village, attended by military and state officials from both nations, including police, military personnel, and co-chiefs. This gathering marks a significant step toward promoting peace and stability in the region.
Kabba asserted that the aggression against Sierra Leone constitutes a violation of international law. “Resolving the longstanding issue between Sierra Leone and Guinea over Yenga, which has persisted for two decades, requires careful attention. The government is actively engaging with the Guinean authorities to seek a resolution,” he stated.
Elaborating on ongoing diplomatic efforts, Kabba noted that current initiatives are focused on a bilateral approach. The issue has also been presented to various organizations, including ECOWAS and the African Union, to which both countries belong.
“All options will be considered,” he said, emphasizing the potential involvement of the International Court of Justice as a final mediation solution if other efforts do not succeed. “Diplomacy is the ultimate recourse for resolving border disputes between two sovereign nations,” he asserted.
