Sierra Leone and China are exploring expanded cooperation in education after Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education Conrad Sackey met with Chinese Ambassador Zhao Yong in Freetown on Tuesday.
The talks centered on broadening Chinese language instruction in schools, boosting support for technical and vocational training, and strengthening exchange programs for students and teachers between the two countries.
Minister Sackey welcomed China’s ongoing assistance to the sector, highlighting recent contributions including rice donations aimed at supporting schools and pupils nationwide. He said the government values partnerships that deliver both immediate relief and long-term capacity building.
The two sides also discussed technical assistance to repair and maintain school buses, a move officials said would help keep students in class by ensuring reliable transport.
“Education remains central to our partnership with China,” Sackey said after the meeting. “We look forward to deepening collaboration in education, cultural exchange, and human capital development for the benefit of both nations.”
The engagement reflects sustained diplomatic and development cooperation between Freetown and Beijing, with education positioned as a priority area.
